1/4 lb macaroni
3 tbsp butter, margarine or salad oil
1/4 c flour
1/4 tsp dry mustard
3/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp bottle thick meat sauce
2 c milk
1 tbsp minced onion
1/4 lb cheddar cheese, grated

Directions:
Cook macaroni until tender, drain. Meanwhile, make sauce as follows: Melt butter in pan, then stir in flour, mustard, salt, and pepper. Add meat sauce, milk and onion and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Add grated cheese and stir until melted.
Combine sauce and macaroni, and turn into a greased 1 1/2 qt casserole. Bake in a moderately hot oven of 400º

This recipe is from the 1944 The Good Houskeeping Cookbook that I bought at a book sale in Pittsburgh when I was pregnant with Misti!
I use whole wheat elbows, steak sauce and packaged shredded cheddar cheese.
I sprinkle the top with Italian style breadcrumbs.
With 5 miuntes left to the cook time, I sprinkle cheese over top as well.
