4 tbsp. butter
3/4 c. milk
1/2 c. sugar
2 tsp. salt
1 egg, well beaten
2 packages of dry yeast
1/4 c. lukewarm water
5 - 6 c. all purpose flour

Filling:
1 lb. dried pears
1/2 lb. dried prunes
1/2 c. raisins
3/4 c.figs
1/2 c. broken walnuts
juice of one lemon
1/4 c. finely chopped citron
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. kirsch
1 c. red wine
1 - 2 eggs well beaten

Heat better and milk to lukewarm. Stir until butter melts. Add sugar, salt and egg. Cool.

Stir in yeast dissolved in lukewarm water. Blend in flour to form a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured board. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double in bulk.

To make filling:
Cook pears and prunes until tender. Drain and core pears. Pit prunes. Put pears, prunes, raisins, and figs through course knife or a grinder.

Add walnuts, lemon juice, citron, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and kirsch. Blend thoroughly. Add enough red wine to form a thick jam.

To combine dough and filling:
Cut dough into two pieces. Roll out each piece to a 12 inch square. Spread each square with half of the filling. Turn in ends and roll like a jelly roll. Prick the surface with a fork several times. Brush with egg that is beaten. Let the roll rise until double in bulk.

Bake at 350º about 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool before cutting.

If you do not have dried pears one can use dried apples. Grandma (Helen Faulkner) used to make this at Christmas time.
