"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

(Grandma used a special white coffee cup for the sugar measurement. I have a similar cup that she gave me. So when you find an odd white, obviously old, coffee cup, know that this is what is the meringue sugar cup and that it came from your great grandmother).

The first time I tried to make these meringues, I beat and beat the egg whites with no luck. After about 30 minutes, I called Daddy, crying. He asked me what kind of bowl I was using to beat the egg whites. I answered, plastic. NO! Never use a plastic bowl to beat egg whites. I changed the bowl and all went well. I was having my first dinner guests in our first home - Fr Shea and three friends in the clergy. All had to be perfect! It was that same night that his Jesuit friend taught us the blessing, "Rub a dub dub, etc" Aren't we lucky to have this recipe? How many times did we enjoy this heavenly meringue at one of Grandma's family dinners? This is a family treasure.
