"I have long believed that good food, good eating is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime 'associates,' food, for me, has always been an adventure."--Anthony Bourdain

2 c. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. cloves 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1/2 c. shortening 1 c. sugar 1 egg 1 c. fruit-raisins, dates etc. 1 c. nuts 1 c. applesauce "a little milk to get the right consistency"
Mix all ingredients. Place in 350 preheated oven. This recipe was taken out of Aunt Lotties "hand written" cook book of personal recipes and did not mention how long the cake should bake. Insert a toothpick, and when it comes out clean, it is done.
Family Memories from John Vaught: Right next door to Grandma Cater was the telephone exchange. The operator listened to everything! I'd walk by and she'd stick her head out the door and shout "Johnny get home-your mother wants ya!"
