1 cup of butter, softened
1 cup of brown sugar, packed
1 large egg
1 cup pure maple syrup
1 tsp. vanilla extract or maple flavoring
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
4 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 C. white sugar for decoration
30 pecan halves

Preheat oven to 350. Grease cookie sheets. In a large bowl, cream the room temperature butter and brown sugar. Add the egg, syrup and vanilla. Mix until well blended. Sift together the flour, salt and baking soda. Stir into butter mixture until well blended. Shape into 1 inch balls and roll in sugar. Place on cookie sheets about 2 inches apart and flatten slightly. Place a piece of pecan on each cookie and put the cookie tray in the oven. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Let cool on wire rack. Makes 30.

I made my cookies a bit bigger since I like big cookies. If you do the same, make sure to up the cooking time a bit.
