1 large can crushed tomatoes
1 large can whole peeled tomatoes (squished, cores removed)
1 large can tomato puree

Use at least 1 can tomato paste for each big can of tomatoes.
1 medium onion chopped for every big can in gravy pot
2-3 cloves garlic pressed for every big can of tomatoes
Olive oil to cover bottom of frying pan.

Salt and pepper

Empty all the canned tomatoes into a large pot. Rinse each can with water, half full and add to the pot. Cook over medium heat until it comes to a boil. Heat oil in a frying pan. Brown meatballs/brasciole/sausage (recipes separate) and add to tomato sauce, lower heat to simmer. Brown onion and garlic in frying pan until soft. Add to pot of sauce.
Rinse tomato paste cans with water, add to frying pan. Saute until paste turns a darker red, deglaze pan.
Transfer to pot of sauce.
Taste and add spice as necessary and handful of fresh basil. Simmer it all together for a minimum of 1 hour.
