1/2 cup butter softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup icing sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp almond extract
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp red food colour
1/2 cup crushed peppermint (about 5 - 6 candy canes)
1/2 cup granulated sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 375º
Mix butter, shortening, icing sugar & egg.
Blend in flour and salt
Divide dough in 2 parts.
Blend food colouring in one of the parts.
Shape about 1 tsp of dough from each half into a 4 inch rope and twist together like a candy cane.
Spread on parchment lined baking sheet.
Bake 9 minutes or until the cookie is starting to get golden.

Meanwhile, crush the candy canes and add the granulated sugar.

Sprinkle the hot cookies with the crushed candy and sugar mixture.
Let cool.
