Grandma's Lentil Soup Recipe

1 lb dry lentils (washed)
8 cups water
3.5 cups of beef or chicken broth
1 smoked ham bone or hock
1 cup celery chopped small
1 cup carrot chopped small
2 onions chopped finely
3 tbls of minced garlic
1 Bay Leaf
3/4 cup of pastina

Directions:
Directions:
In in 8 qt pot, combine all ingredients and simmer soup, lid tilted, stirring occasionally for 1.5 hours
Then, remove bay leaf and ham bone or hock. Remove meat from bone, chop and stir back into soup.
Boil pastina separately once cooked, add to soup.
(I like to add a can of diced tomatoes, drained to soup as well)

Great fall and winter soup. Had it often in the kitchen at 18 Applecrest Road during the short cold days of fall and winter as a kid visiting Grandma. When I make and enjoy this resipe I brings me back to those times and winter evenigs at Gram's.
