2 qts. apple juice or cider
1 pint. cranberry juice
3/4 cup sugar
2 sticks cinnamon
1 small orange studded with whole cloves
1 cup rum

Mix all ingredients except rum. Cook on High for 1 hour. Then cook on low for 4-8 hours. Add rum last hour.
I like to make 2 batches, one without rum for children and guest who don't want alcohol.

I got this recipe during a holiday party at Middleton Plantation 30 years ago. We were served a holiday meal similar to the ones served in Colonial times. The Wassail was served as we waited for all the guests to arrive and everyone was given a copy of the recipe.
