1/2 c. Cocoa powder
1/2 c. Boiling water
2/3 c. Vegetable shortening (crisco)
1 3/4 c. Granulated sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/4 c. Unsifted flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/3 c. Buttermilk or sour milk*
*to sour milk: add 1 Tbsp plus 1 tsp. vinegar to 1 1/3

Frosting:
3/4 c. Granulated sugar
3/4 c. Boiling water
3/4 c. Butter
2 egg yolks
6 c. 10x sugar

Cake:
Place cocoa powder in a small bowl & add boiling water. Stir till smooth; set aside. Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla in a large bowl; blend in eggs. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add alternately with buttermilk to the creamed mixture. Blend in reserved cocoa mixture.pour into 2 greased and floured 9 " or 3 - 8" layer pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 - 40 minutes for 9" layers or 25 - 30 minutes for 8" layers or till center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes remove from pans. Cool completely before frosting.

Frosting:
Pour sugar into a heavy skillet. Cook and stir constantly over low heat till sugar melts & starts to turn dark golden in color; gradually stir in the boiling water. Cook and stir over low heat until sugar dissolves & mixture comes to a boil, boil for 2 minutes. Cool completely. Cream the butter in a large bowl. Add the egg yolks, blend well. Add the confectioners sugar and sugar syrup, reserving 2 tablespoons of syrup. Beat to spreading consistency. ( if too thick, add hot water a little at a time till you get a good spreadable frosting) Frost cake, drizzle with the reserved syrup. This is very sweet so make your slices small.
