1/4 cup butter - melted
3 cups (or more if needed for thickness) powdered sugar
add milk (or cream) to reach desired thickness
add 1 -2 teaspoons vanilla

Stir until smooth

I don't really use a recipe for this so feel free to add additional sugar as needed to get this right. Don't add too much milk or you'll have to add a lot more sugar to get it thick. You can add cream cheese too (softened) if you want cream cheese frosting.

I recommend sifting the powdered sugar to keep the lumps out of the frosting. Also using the melted butter while still warm helps to keep the frosting from getting lumpy.
