1 C soft shortening
2 C brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 C water or buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
3 1/2 C flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1/8 tsp cinnamon

Date Filling:
2 C dates finely cut
3/4 C sugar
3/4 C water
1/2 C chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, brown sugar, and eggs. Stir in water and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients and stir into the sugars. Set cookie dough aside until filling is ready. Combine all of the filling ingredients except for the nuts and cook in saucepan until thick, add nuts and cool Drop by tsp on greased baking sheet the cookie dough then place 1/2 tsp date filling on dough, cover with another tsp of dough. Bake at 400º until lightly browned (10-12 min).

This has been a long-standing Christmas cookie that Mom (Iola Donnelly) made each year. I know brother Rob (Donnelly) loves these as well. After introducing into the Allen family, they too became my Mother-In-Law's (Shirley Allen) favorite Christmas cookie.
