5 eggs - beaten
3 1/2 cups sugar
1 gallon milk
cornstarch

Beat together the 5 eggs and 3 1/2 cups sugar. Warm the gallon of milk in a large pot. In a pint jar, mix 3 tablespoons cornstarch with cold water - - shake until dissolved. In a double boiler have water on medium high. To the warm gallon milk, add the beaten eggs and sugar mixture - only a small amount at a time - stir while adding. After mixing together well - place pot in double boiler. Add cornstarch to mixture - small amount at a time while stirring well (medium-high heat).
Stir constantly while cooking so it won't stick.
Stir until it gets thick. About 30 minutes. Fill sink with cold water. Place pot of custard into cold water to cool - stir until thick. Add three (3) tablespoons vanilla. Continue to stir - stir until thick. (If custard
has any lumps - strain through a strainer.
Put into quart jars. Cool before putting in refrigerator. Makes 5 quarts.

This recipe has been handed down from Barry's Aunt Sadie on his mother's side. Every year she would make this in the same special pot.
