1 c. sugar
1 c. molasses
1 c. shortening
1 t. salt
1 t. ginger
1 t. cinnamon
1 t. baking soda
1 egg
1 T. vanilla
1 c. cold water
3 c. flour (plus)

Directions:
Directions:
Combine all ingredients 1 by 1 including enough flour to handle. Refrigerate dough for at least 1 hour. Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with 2 - 3 inch cutter. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.

Sometimes I have added up to 4 cups of flour for handling. Too much flour will make them tough, but you need to be able to roll the dough without it sticking to the rolling pin. Leona Leavitt was a client of mine in the beauty shop. This is also one of my family's favorites.
