1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 oz. red food coloring
2 eggs
2 cups flour
1 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. vinegar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream the shortening and sugar.
Add the vanilla and food coloring.
Add the eggs one at a time- mix well.
Sift and measure flour, cocoa and salt. Sift 3 times.
Add alternately with buttermilk. Beat well.
Dissolve baking soda in vinegar.
Fold in baking soda dissolved in vinegar.

Bake in 2, 10 inch pans at 375º until firm (start checking at 20 minutes).
Check firmness by poking cake with knife or toothpick. Done when knife comes out clean and bounces back when touched.
