1 c. finely chopped dates
1 c. hot water
1/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. chopped nuts
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 2/3 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt

Topping:
1/2c. choc chips
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1/2 c. finely chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Prep time 1 1/4 hours (including bake time)

1. Heat oven to 350º and grease a 9 x 9 x 1 3/4 inch pan
2. Pour hot water over dates and allow to cool.
3. Combine shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla in mixing bowl.
4. Sift flour, salt, and soda and stir into shortening mixture. Add dates.
5. Pour into greased pan and sprinkle with topping.
6. Bake for 40-50 minutes
