2 1/4 cups unsifted flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup shortening
1/3 cup molasses
1 egg

Directions:
Directions:
In a large bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, salt, and spices. In a separate bowl, cream together sugar, shortening, molasses, and eggs thoroughly. Add creamed mixture to dry ingredients and mix well. Shape dough into one inch balls and dip the top into sugar. Place on an ungreased baking sheet and bake in a 350º oven for 12 to 15 minutes.
