2 c raisins
1 c water
1 tsp. soda
1 c shortening
2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. each nutmeg and allspice
2 c granulated sugar
3 eggs, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
4 c sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 c chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Combine raisins and water. Boil 5 minutes. There should be 1/2 cup liquid left. Cool, then add soda. Blend shortening with salt and spices. Gradually add sugar, creaming thoroughly. Add eggs, vanilla and cooled raisin-soda mix. Add flour sifted and baking powder, mix well. Stir in nuts. Chill dough until stiff. Drop by rounded teaspoons on greased cookie sheets and bake at 400º for 10-12 minutes.
