8 egg whites beaten
¼ tsp. cream of tartar
2 ½ c. sugar
1 tsp. vinegar
1 can sweetened condensed milk
juice and rind of two lemons
1 pint whipping cream

Directions:
Directions:
Beat egg whites and add cream of tartar. Then gradually add sugar and vinegar. Place in large cake pan. Bake for 1 ½ hrs. at 250º. Turn off oven and let sit for 15 min. Then open oven door and let cool.

Whip condensed milk and lemon juice and rind. Whip pint of cream and fold over torte. Refrigerate.

In all of Mother Z, Mother H., or Mom's recipes, we found no "Torte" recipes, except those from Aunt Mary. I also found quite a few torte recipes in the Hingham (where I grew up) Church cook books. I recall that after the war (WWII) more "fancy" entrées appeared. Aunt Mary was usually on the cutting edge of the new things, or so it seemed to me. For example, she was the person who introduced instant pudding to our family.
