1/2 c. shortening
2 1-oz. squares unsweetened chocolate
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. sour milk or buttermilk
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. nuts
1 c. chocolate pieces

Frosting:
1/4 c. butter
2 T. cocoa
2 tsp. instant coffee powder
dash salt
2 1/2 c. sifted confectioners sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
about 3 T. milk

Directions:
Cookies: Melt shortening & unsweetened chocolate together in a saucepan. Cool. Stir in brown sugar. Beat in the eggs, vanilla & buttermilk or sour milk. Sift together dry ingredients & add to chocolate mixture. Stir in nuts & chocolate pieces. Drop on greased sheet. Bake 375º about 10 min. Cool.

Frosting: Cream together butter, cocoa powder and salt. Beat in sugar, vanilla and enough milk for spreading.
