1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 package of dates, chopped and precooked
2 cups oatmeal
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup shortening
1 scant tsp. baking soda
1/3 cup cornstarch

Directions:
Directions:
Mix dates and one cup of water, put saucepan, bring to a boil, and reduce heat to simmer, 10 to 15 minutes.
If dates are watery, thicken with 1/3 cup of cornstarch mixed with cold water.
Combine remaining ingredients using a pastry mixer until crumbly. In a 13 by 9 by 2 pan, place 1/2 mixture on bottom, greased. Place dates on mixture, cover with remaining crumb mixture. Bake for 1/2 hour, cool then cut.
Bake 350º
