Ingredients: 1/2 cup Shortening 1 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 cup thick sour cream 1 tsp. vanilla 2 3/4 cup flour 1/2 tsp. Baking Soda 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder 1/2 tsp. salt 2/3 cup chopped nuts (optional)
* Reminder to use fresh Baking Powder and Soda for best results
** (If you are in a pinch and don't have sour cream on hand you can substitute 1 can of evaporated milk mixed with 1 Tbsp. of Vinegar)

Directions:Blend sugar, shortening and eggs. Mix remaining ingredients. Drop rounded teaspoonful 2" apart on sprayed cookie sheet. Bake at 425 º for 8- 10 min. While still warm spread with Burnt Sugar Icing.
Icing: Heat 4 Tbsp. Butter until golden brown. Blend in 1 cup sifted Powdered sugar and 1/2 tsp. Vanilla. Stir in 1-2 Tbsp. hot water until icing spreads smoothly..
Ice cookies immediately. It will just glide over the cookies and as they cool will become the delicious coating that melts in your mouth ! |

Notes: This is from my Grandma ( Catherine ) Haxmeier. This was another one of our favorites as kids or at least for those of us lucky enough to remember them. Who knows where she kept them in the kitchen of the house in town ? How about the farm house?? The frosting is a little tricky but totally worth the effort.
