1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup chopped dates
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 and 1/2 cups plus 3 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoons baking soda
1/3 cup sugar
6 ounce package chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together and let cool: 1 and 1/2 half cups of BOILING water, 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 cup chopped dates.

Cream together: 1 cup shortening, 1 cup sugar, 2 eggs. Add cooled date mixture to creamed mixture.

Sift together: 1 and 1/2 cups plus 3 tablespoons flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 3/4 teaspoons baking soda. Blend wet and dry ingredients then pour into a 9 x13 metal, WELL greased and floured pan.

Sprinkle on top of the batter: 1/3 cup sugar, 6 ounce package of chocolate chips and 1/2 cup chopped nuts.

Bake in 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes.

When I was a young girl, I loved eating this special cake my Aunt Vi made.
When I got married in the late 1960's I asked her for this recipe. I have retyped it here from a very old, faded note card. Now I am in my "60's" and this is still one of my favorites. It is also to this day, the only way I will eat anything with dates in it!!
