1 c. Whole Milk
1/2 c. Crisco
1 tsp. Sugar
1-1/2 envelopes Dry Yeast
1/2 c. Water
1/2 c. Sugar
2 Eggs, beaten
3-1/2 c. Flour

Filling: Sugar, Cinnamon, Raisins, Maraschino Cherries

Scald milk and Crisco and cool to lukewarm. Dissolve sugar with yeast in water. Add to cooled milk and Crisco. Beat in sugar, eggs, and flour. Let rise 45 minutes and then punch down. Let rise a second time until double in size.

Divide dough into two parts. Roll each into rectangle and spread on filling. .Cut into three strips and braid. Tuck ends under. Place in 5x8-in. loaf pan and drizzle melted butter and sugar on top.

Bake at 350º for 30 minutes.

A loaf of this bread was Grandma's present to us every year. Lightly toasted and generously buttered, it was the perfect breakfast on Christmas morning. Eventually, Grandma figured out specific measurements and showed Nancy how to make it.
