Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
1/2 c. sour cream and 1 tsp. soda or 1/2 c. canned milk and 1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
4 eggs
1/2 tsp. salt
flour enough to make dough that can be rolled

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat. Add salt, either baking powder or soda to the flour and sift into mixture alternately with the milk. Continue beating and adding flour to form ball as for biscuits. With your hand, mix a portion with more flour on floured board until it can be rolled out to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out cookies. Place on cookie sheet with spatula and bake 8 or 10 minutes to a delicate brown. Do not overbake. If you have animal cookie cutters for a children's party, let the children help cut them out. Ice and let the children decorate with colored sugar, small candies, or chopped nuts.

Annie Bower Pitzer called this recipe "Mother's Cookie Recipe" when she contributed it to the 1925 Women's Work group at the Bartlesville Church of the Brethren for their cookbook project.
