Milk, 2 T butter, salt and pepper. With a vegetable parer; pare the skins from the potatoes. Rinse them off under running cold water. Cut the potatoes in quarter. Put them in the saucepan and enough cold water to cover them. Add the salt.
Cook the potatoes over medium-high heat until the water boils. Then lower the heat to medium and cook until the potatoes are tender when you stick a fork into them, about 30 minutes. Ask someone older to drain the potatoes into a colander in the sink. Put the drained potatoes back in the pot. Mash the potatoes with the potato masher until all the lumps are gone, and then beat the milk and butter a little at a time with a fork. Add a little salt and pepper and beat until the potatoes are fluffy.
Scoop the potatoes into a serving dish.
