1 c. sliced, pitted dates
1 c. boiling water
1 c. brown sugar, packed
2 Tbs. butter
1 extra large egg
1 tsp. pure vanilla
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

1 c. chopped nuts
1 1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
2 Tbs. butter
1 1/2 c. boiling water
Whipping cream or vanilla ice cream

Directions:
Directions:
Slice dates in a bowl. Pour on boiling water and set aside.
Sift flour, soda, and salt, and sift again.
Blend 1 c.sugar and 2 Tbs.butter.
Add egg and vanilla and beat thoroughly in large bowl.
Sift dry ingredients together and mix with egg mixture until blended.
Add date mixture and nuts.
Pour into a buttered 9" pudding dish or 9" baking pan.
Sauce:
Combine 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar with 2 Tbs.butter and 1 1/2 c. boiling water. Pour mixture over the batter in the baking dish.
Bake at 350º for 35-40 minutes or until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cut into squares or spoon into pudding dishes along with sauce.
Serve with sweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
