Ingredients:
Ingredients:
Johnathan apples, peeled and cored

Dough:
2 c flour
1 tsp salt
1 1/3 c shortening
1 egg, beaten
5 tbsp cold water
1 tsp white vinegar

Topping:
1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Syrup:
1 c sugar
1 c water
3 tbsp butter
1/4 tsp cinnamon

Directions:
Directions:
For Dough: Mix salt into flour and cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly. Mix egg, cold water and vinegar together in a small bowl. Add liquid to flour and mix with fork until dough pulls away from the side of the bowl. Form into smooth ball by hand. This recipe makes enough for 9 dumplings.

For each Dumpling: Roll out enough dough to make a 9-inch circle. Place apple in the center of the dough. Mix sugar and cinnamon for topping, and fill the core with 1 heaping tbsp of this mixture. Dot top of core with 1 tsp butter. Bring the sides of the dough around the apple and press together until the dough is completely sealed around the apple and the thickness is even.

For Syrup: Mix sugar, water, butter and cinnamon in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 3 min. Place wrapped apples in a baking dish so they are not touching. Pour syrup mixture in the bottom of the baking pan, but not on the top of the dumplings.

Bake @ 400º for 1 hr, until dough is browned and apples are tender.

Personal Notes:
GMA made the best apple dumplings! If you don't want to go to the trouble of making them from scratch, the Tecumseh United Methodist Women sell them at their annual fall festival each November. They are a Thanksgiving tradition at our house.
