1 cup - Dates,cut fine
1 tsp - Baking Soda
1 1/2 cup - Water,boiling
1 cup - White Sugar
1/2 cup - Shortening
2 - Eggs
1 tsp. - Vanilla
1/1/2 cup - Flour
3/4 tsp. - Baking Soda
1/4 tsp. Salt

Topping
6 oz. Chocolate Chips
1/2 cup - Sugar
1/2 cup - Walnuts,chopped
Directions:
Directions:
Add dates to boiling water with soda and let stand until cool.
Mix together sugar, shortening, eggs, vanilla, flour, soda and salt.
Combine with date mixture after it has cooled and add to greased 9X13 cake pan. Add topping of sugar, chips and nuts to top of mixture in pan. Bake in a 350º oven for 40 to 45 minutes.
