Ingredients:  
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sour milk or buttermilk (sour milk can be made by adding 1 tsp. vinegar to 1 cup milk)
1 egg
pinch of salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour

Date Filling:
1 cup chopped dates
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup water

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and butter. Add beaten egg and salt. Dissolve soda in sour milk and add to egg mixture. Add vanilla, then add flour and baking powder, sifted together. Roll out quite thin. To make filling, boil dates, sugar and water until thick. Put a tsp. of filling on one cookie. Cover with another cookie and pinch edges together. Can also place in center of round cookie and fold over. Bake at 350º until golden, 8-10 minutes.
