˝ lb. butter (2 sticks) softened but cool
3 cups sifted powdered sugar
2 tsp. vanilla extract or vanilla bean
˝ tsp. freshly grated or ground nutmeg
Ľ c. brandy and 2 tbsp. brandy more as needed
Grated zest of 1 orange

Beat first 4 ingredients until light and fluffy, but still thick enough to hold its shape.
Continue beating, and slowly add brandy- keep adding brandy till you reach the taste, consistency, and saturation desired.
Serve chilled, on warm plum pudding or fruit cake (the only way these items are edible).

This is a holiday tradition from Chris’s family. His grandmother, Georgie Ducas, and his aunt, Sally Connellan, made sure I could replicate this "hard sauce" correctly.
