Boil sugar, butter, milk and cocoa to "soft ball" stage.
This is the fun part for kids, since you have to drop some of the chocolate into a small bowl of cold water to see if it forms a ball.
After boiling to "soft ball" stage, add vanilla and oatmeal and mix it up.
Drop by spoonfuls on wax paper.
NOTE: If you don't boil long enough, you'll get my mom's favorite "Gooey Cookies" and if you over boil, you'll get crumbs that are good on ice cream! You can't lose! |

Notes: My grandma Wedgewood started the “No Bake Cookies” in our family, I know a lot of people know this cookie and have variations. Grandma always let us “help” making these cookies and we always expected these cookies when were at grandma’s. My mom can make them, but she likes them gooey so I kind of remember her making them, but not as yummy as grandma. When I became a mom and aunt, I started making them for Jack and my 4 nieces and nephews – yes – letting them help! Over the years the cookies are a welcome comfort food. They have been mailed many miles, been given for get well wishes, present in the hospital at births of the new babies blessing our lives, and many, many, family gatherings. There have been times, if I didn’t make the cookies for a gathering the “kids” now all adults, would dig out the ingredients and mix up a batch. The recipe is being passed on, Jack knows it by heart and my two nieces make these cookies for office parties and their family gatherings.
