1 C butter
3/4 C sugar
1 egg (or 3 yolks)
1 tsp vanilla or almond extract
2 1/2 C all purpose flour
1/8 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder

Directions:
Directions:
Cram the butter and extract thoroughly; add sugar slowly, creaming constantly. Add the beaten egg or yolks and cream until very light and fluffy. Sift flour once before measuring, then sift flour, salt, and baking powder and add to creamed mixture. Beat well. Chill dough at least 1 hour before rolling onto a board. roll on lightly floured board or cloth to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with heart-shaped cutter. Brush with slightly beaten egg white and sprinkle with red colored sugar or cover with red or pink icing when baked. Bake on cookie sheets in a hot 400º oven for 10-12 minutes.
