"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Directions:
Boil 2 cups of sugar and corn syrup. Cool. In a seperate bowl, beat eggs. Add sweet cream, to the above mixture. Add melted shortening, baking soda dissolved in a little hot water. Sift about 2 cups of flour, anise, and baking powder together. Add to other mixture and more flour to make a soft dough (about 12 cups total.) Place spoonful, mounded on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
Test a few in oven. My mother always put powdered sugar in a bag and shook the cookies until coated.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This was Grandmother Berreth's (Roland's mother's) recipe. My mother made this often at Christmas when I was growing up. She would coat the cookies in powdered sugar and put them loose in a drawer. I remember opening that drawer and eating those cookies until Easter. Jaci used to like it when Grandma Vera brought these when she came to visit.
