Ingredients:
6 lbs apples (about 18 medium)
1-1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
Peel, core, and slice apples.

Put the apples, sugar, and spices in a crock pot (4 quarts or larger). Cover and cook on high for one hour.

Remove the lid, and cook on low until the apple butter becomes thick and of a spreadable consistency and is dark brown in color. About 12 hours on low or less on high. You can't really over cook this and you can even let it cook overnight. Stir occasionally. Mash apples with a potato masher, immersion blender, or the back of a spoon to help it become smooth.

Spoon hot apple butter into clean jars or plastic containers, store in fridge and use in two weeks, or freeze for up to a year. (you can also process this in a water bath then store on the pantry shelf...look up home canning for details)

This is a great way to use up apples left over from apple picking and makes the house smell so good. You can get Ball jars from any grocery store, they make a nice look for gift giving. We love apple butter on biscuits or toast.
