1/2 c. Crisco
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
2 1/4 c. cake flour
2 oz. red cake color
1 1/2 tsp. vinegar

Icing:
4tbsp. flour
1c. milk
1/2 c. Crisco
1/2 c. margarine (room temp.)
1c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, add sugar gradually, then eggs, one at a time. Add dry ingredients; alternately with buttermilk. Add cake coloring and vinegar together. Mix well with a spoon. Do not beat after vinegar is added. Bake in 3- 8 or 9 inch pans for 30 - 35 min. at 350º

Icing:
Combine flour and milk. Stir. Take off heat, put a lid on tight and let cool thoroughly. Cream remaining ingredients until fluffy; add thickening. Beat until consistently of whipped cream. Add 1/2 c. to 3/4 c. nuts or coconut.
