Ingredients: 1 cup sugar ½ cup nuts ¾ cup butter 2 cups flour 1 egg 2 tsp baking soda 1 ½ cup applesauce ¼ tsp. cloves 1 cup raisins ½ tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. vanilla ½ tbsp. cocoa

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine all ingredients; mix well.
Bake in tube or Bundt pan well greased and floured for approximately 60 minutes at 350 degrees or until toothpick comes out clean.
NOTE 1: I always more cocoa than Grandma Shrader. You can add more nuts and raisins too, depending on what you like.
NOTE 2: Recipe calls for well-greased/floured tube or Bundt pan but I have used non-stick spray and it seems to work. Grandma Shrader just did not have that available when she was baking. |

Notes: Here is a recipe that came from my great-grandma Shrader. It is popular in our households during the holidays especially but is good anytime. Our family’s answer to fruitcake. Nobody really likes fruitcake but this cake is good and actually gets eaten. In fact, when I asked my mother to send me another copy of the recipe (I do so once a year instead of trying to remember where on my computer I filed it) she sent me an email telling me it was “too early” for applesauce cake.
