2 C apples, diced fine
1 C sugar
1 egg
1 C sifted flour
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp soda
1/2 C nuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Let sugar stand on apples until dissolved, then add egg and beat with an electric mixer. Add dry ingredients. Bake in 8 x 8 pan 30 - 40 minutes at 350º. Let cake cool. Serve cake with hot sauce spooned over.Recipe for sauce is:
1/2 C brown sugar, 1/2 C white sugar, 3 T flour, 3 T water, 1/2 C butter, 1 tsp vanilla. Cook these ingredients until sugar is dissolved and serve hot over cake. A substitute is a jar of caramel ice cream topping, not nearly as good or fulfilling
