2 cups sugar
3/4 pound butter
4 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk
2 pounds raisins
1/4 pound each of candied cherries, pineapple, orange peel, chopped
1/2 pound each citron, figs, almonds or English walnuts, chopped

1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon each cinnamon and allspice
1 cup grape juice or wine

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar until light. Add beaten eggs. Mix thoroughly. Mix part of flour with fruit and nuts. Mix spices, soda and salt with remaining flour. Mix flour and milk alternately into butter/egg mixture. Next add fruit then grape juice or wine. Put in greased tube pan. Bake at 250º for 3 hours.

Note: Cake is better made ahead of time, wrapped in cheese cloth soaked with wine and kept in an air tight container. Add more rum as cheese cloth dries out. Will keep for months.
