3 cups applesauce, plain or sweetened
2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
3/4 lb candied fruit mix 1-1/2 cups
1/4 lb halved candied cherries (1/2 cup)
1/4 lb diced candied pineapple (1/2 cup)
1 lb raisins
1 lb pitted dates, cut up
1 cup nuts
4-1/2 cups sifted flour
4 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
2-1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cloves

Directions:

Combine applesauce, sugar and shortening in saucepan; boil 5 minutes. Cool to room temperature. Measure prepared fruit and nuts into large bowl. Sift dry ingredients over mixture; mix until fruit is well coated. Add cooled applesauce mixture; blend thoroughly. Line three 9x5 inch loaf pans with well-greased foil. Pack dough in pans. Bake at 250º for about 2-1/2 hours. Cool cakes then wrap and store.
