1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup (6-oz.pkg.) pitted dates, cut up (or 1 cup seedless raisins)
1/2 cup chopped pecans

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together shortening, sugar, and vanilla. Add eggs, beating well. Sift together dry ingredients and stir into creamed mixture. Stir in dates and nuts.

Divide in 4 portions. On greased cookie sheets, spread each in 12 x 2 1/2 x 1/2 inch strip (about 3 inches apart). Bake in moderate oven about 375º for about 15 minutes or until lightly browned.

While warm, cut diagonally in bars. Remove to cooling rack. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar.

Makes about 3 dozen.
