Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Add vanilla. Mix soda in the buttermilk. Put baking powder in flour. Add milk and flour alternately. Spoon onto cookie sheet and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Place a “red cinnamon” in center of cookie. (At Christmas, I use the red and green sugars.) Bake at 375 degrees for about 12 minutes.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
My best girlfriend, Kathy Hughes Stahl, lived along the “tow path” when I was growing up. We were friends since 5th grade, and later became best friends. When we were in 9th grade home-economics class, we had to prepare a full course dinner for our final exam. I still have the recipes from that meal. Over the years, Kathy has shared with me many of her mother’s (Ione Hughes) wonderful recipes plus those she has accumulated. This sugar cookie recipe is one of my sons’ favorites.
