Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add beaten egg and lemon extract. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt (new version: measure flour, baking powder and salt on wax paper, stir slightly and "dump" in the shortening and sugar mixture). Mix well, roll in 2" rolls, chill and slice (or roll out and use cookie cutter). Brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar. Bake 400 degrees f oven for 6 minutes.

(very flakey with a touch of lemon flavoring--also good with frosting)

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
My dad and uncle worked swing shift so on Friday nights, my mother and we three siblings would go to Aunt Dot's house and watch Schlitz Playhouse of the Stars and Inner Sanctum on television and Aunt Dot would have things ready for me to make cookies. It would either be sugar cookies or brownies. I can't find the Brownie recipe. She left me alone in the kitchen and would giggle at my progress. I think I was about 10 years old.
