• 3 cups flour
• 4 tsp. baking powder
• 2/8 tsp. salt
• 1 cup shortening
• 2 cups sugar
• 4 eggs, separated
• 1 cup milk
• 2 tsp. vanilla
• 5 squares chocolate, cut into pieces

Directions:

Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Cream shortening with 1/3 cup sugar until fluffy. Beat egg yolks until thick, add 1/3 cup of sugar gradually until very thick. Add to shortening mixture.

Add sifted dry ingredients and milk alternately in small amounts beating thoroughly after each addition. Beat egg whites until foamy, beat in remaining sugar gradually and continue beating until stiff enough to hold a peak. Fold egg whites, vanilla, and chocolate into batter. Pour mixture into a greased cake pan and bake at 350 º C for 30 minutes. Let cool. Frost top and sides with peppermint frosting.
