1 1/2 cups of your favorite beans*
2 qt. water
1 T. salt
1 lb. ham pieces
2 qt. water
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 large can tomatoes or tomato sauce
1 large onion, chopped
juice of one lemon
salt and pepper to taste
dash red pepper

Directions:
Directions:
Cover beans with water and 1 T. salt. Soak 3 hours or overnight. Drain before use. Add beans with remaining ingredients and cook in slow cooker or large kettle for at least 4 hours. (*your choice of kidney, navy, black, small red, yellow or green split peas, garbanzo, pinto, black-eyed peas, baby Lima, speckled Lima or butter beans.) May substitute 2 chicken breasts for ham; add 1 tsp. salt and 2 chicken bouillon cubes. During last 30 minutes of cooking, add 1 (10 oz.) can of diced tomatoes and green chili peppers. Shred chicken before serving.
