5 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves, optional
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 c. molasses

Directions:
Directions:
Oven: 375º ~ Yield: 72 cookies
Mix the dry ingredients and set aside. Cream the shortening and sugar in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Add the egg and molasses and beat until smooth. Add the flour mixture gradually, beating constantly. Cover; chill for 3 hours. Roll 1/8-inch thick on a floured surface. Cut with cookie cutters and place on a cookie sheet. Bake for 8 minutes. Cool on the cookie sheet for 1 minute and then remove to a wire rack. Use red-hots, currants and white frosting to decorate.
