2 c. sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. white syrup
1 T. vinegar
5 qt. popped corn

Directions:
Cook all ingredients in a large kettle until firm ball cracks. Pour over popped corn. Butter your hands and shape into balls. (Grandma Gladys Schnaithman made these popcorn balls, tinted with food coloring. She'd often give out over 100 on Halloween.)

Variation: Keep 5 qt. popped corn hot and crisp in a 300º degree oven. Butter sides of a saucepan. Combine 1 1/2 c. water, 1/2 c. light corn syrup, 2 c. sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp. vinegar and cook to hard ball stage (about 250º). Remove from heat and add 1 tsp. vanilla. Pour slowly over the popcorn, stirring just enough to mix thoroughly. Butter hands and shape into balls. Makes 20 to 50 balls. (Ruth Hawkins)

Popcorn was first grown commercially in 1888 by an Odebolt, Iowa farmer and is now exported worldwide.
