1 package German Chocolate
1/2 c boiling water
4 eggs separated
2 c sugar
1 c Crisco shortening
1 c buttermilk (divided 3/4 c and 1/4 c)
1 t baking soda
2 1/2 c cake flour
1/4 t salt
1 t vanilla
Frosting:
1 c sugar
2 egg yolks
1/2 pt whipping cream (or milnot)
1/2 c chopped pecans
1 c short coconut
1 stick butter
1 t vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve german chocolate in 1/2 c boiling water, set to the side and allow mixture to cool. Beat 4 egg whites at a high speed until stiff, set to the side. Cream sugar, shortening and egg yolks. Next alternately add buttermilk and cake flour until sugar mixture is well blended, set to the side. Add 1/4 t salt to chocolate and mix in batter. Add 1 t vanilla and fold in egg whites. Grease and flour 3 9" pans and bake at 350º for 35 minutes.

While the cake is baking make the frosting. Mix sugar, egg yolks, whipping cream, pecans, coconut, butter, and vanilla. Stir and cook until thick.

Remove cake allow the cake to cool completely then frost.
