1 C. shortening
1 1/2 C. brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 C. molasses
2 Tbsp. vinegar
2 Tbsp water
5 C. flour
4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. clove
1/2 tsp. allspice
granulated sugar

Preheat oven to 350º.
Cream together shortening and brown sugar. Add the egg, molasses, vinegar and water; mix well.
Combine flour, soda, salt and spices, stir to blend. Add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture and beat well.
Drop by the heaping tablespoon into a bowl of granulated sugar; turn carefully to coat. Place on a cookie sheet, then flatted to 1/4 inch with the bottom of a drinking glass.
Bake for 10-12 minutes. Transfer to a rack to cool.
