"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Directions:
Mix first four ingredients together. Stir over low heat until sugar is dissolved. Then bring to a boil. Cook to soft ball stage. Add cut dates. Cook 1 minute more. Stir to prevent sticking. Remove and add nuts. Let cool to lukewarm. Beat until it stiffens. Pour out on damp towel and mold in roll about 1 ¼ to 1 ½ inches in diameter. When cold, remove towel. Roll candy in powdered sugar (if desired. I do some of the time.) Slice with sharp knife.
